Beginning a Sculpture in Clay
Every sculptor has their own unique way of working, and at times different projects call for different methods. However, one way that I work is to quickly build a sculpture in water based clay to ensure my general proportions are correct. This is how I “rough-in” a sculpture:

Roughed in and Ready for Refining
This is as far as I will take the sculpture in clay, the next steps involve making a mold of this clay model and then casting this sculpture in wax so that more refined details can be easily added.
After many more days working on the sculpture in wax, I will eventually come to the point where I feel the sculpture is ready to be permanently turned into metal. At this point I will create another mold to capture all these refined details and bring the sculpture to a foundry where they will cast the sculpture in bronze.
